Myth: By overpaying your ticket and not accepting a refund, you won't get a conviction

By Jonathan van Ekelenburg

If you overpay the fine on your ticket, you will be issued a refund for the remaining balance. It is your choice whether or not to cash that refund, but the courts will not care if you do or do not. It will have no bearing whatsoever on the conviction you receive from paying your ticket.

Remember, paying your ticket means that you are pleading guilty, regardless of whether you have fought it or not. Even if you pay too much, you are still pleading guilty to the ticket, and you will receive a conviction. If you don't cash the refund you receive, you're just throwing out money.
